Using glass art to practice mindfulness

Mindfulness helps us stay in the present moment. It allows us to become aware of our body, how we feel (both physically and emotionally), our thoughts, imagination and how we respond or react to each moment in life.

Creating ‘pauses’ in our everyday life can help us connect with ourselves and others on a deeper level, and there’s nothing better than art to help us achieve that. It invites you to step into the present moment, unplug from your everyday worries, and focus deeply on what’s right in front of you.

Two of my favorite pieces to help me meditate are “SANTORINI” and “FOUND.”

“SANTORINI”

Glass wall art depicting Santorini, Italy

Santorini is one of my favorite places to visit and on my return from my last trip, I created this glass art mural to commemorate the joy of its sweeping vistas, winding streets and rolling sea.

“FOUND” highlights the sanctity of opening up to new experiences and processing the feelings that you discover.

Here’s a little guide I use to help meditate with glass art:

You can meditate using art that you already have in your home. Even if you look at the piece of work every day, by focusing on it and getting drawn into the work, it will allow you to appreciate something different each time you look at it.

  • Start by removing distractions. Switch off your phone, or put on DND to give yourself the space and time to meditate. Make a conscious decision to focus solely on one piece of art – even if it’s just for a few minutes.
  • If it helps, you can play some relaxing music in the background to help you zone in. Focus on your breathing. Feel the sensation of your body and be aware of the surfaces that it touches.
  • When you look at the artwork, be aware of the emotions it evokes. Simply notice your reactions and try to accept them without judgment or expectations of what you think you “should” be feeling instead.
  • Notice the intricate detail in the art, and what you are drawn to and focus on those for a while. The great thing about glass art is that it offers a reflective light and you may notice the reflection of yourself, or your surroundings as you look at it.
  • Remember there is no right or wrong when it comes to art. Meanings and feelings are very personal and unique to everyone so immerse yourself for as long as you need to and be ok with what comes up for you.

I invite you to visit my art studio, where you can have a quiet time of reflection looking at all my available work and see which piece resonates with you the most.
