Our homes provide one of the best opportunities to express our own unique style and individuality. Whenever I get to visit clients in their homes, if I am hanging art for them or creating a commissioned piece of glass art, I am always inspired by everyone’s individual tastes.
You might be wondering how you can express yourself with interior design, but the good news is it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few simple ideas:
Choosing Colors
Color can affect your mood and energy level and are also a direct reflection of your personality, so choose them thoughtfully.
When deciding what color to paint a particular room in your house, ask yourself:
- What mood do I want to create in this room?
- What colors match that mood for me?
- What colors would blend well with the furniture and accessories I already have in this room?
Finding the Right Artwork
Choosing the right artwork can really complete a room and provide a great focal point. It’s a way to express yourself through color, content, and texture. Having a strong emotional connection to the art in your home is also important. Whether it reminds you of a special vacation, a specific memory, or just gives you a good feeling, it will subtly influence you everyday, so make sure it influences you for the better.
If you are looking for a large piece of art, you have to ensure that it will fit in where you are intending it to go without overwhelming the rest of your interior’s design.
If you are starting with a large piece of art and are building the room around it, which is usually how I create my rooms as well, pull a couple favorite colors from your artwork, mix in a complimentary neutral and color as well, and pull textiles and accessories that go with that palate with different textures to help pull the room together. You’d be shocked how quickly a new rug and a few pillows makes an otherwise thrown together room feel fresh and coherent.
Displaying Favorite Items
Another way to express your personal style is by displaying single items together in a creative way, for example old photos, your favorite memorabilia, or items you have brought back from your travels. You can display your collection of favorite things by hanging a gallery wall or simply incorporate them into a bookshelf or cabinet, having lots of fun rearranging it every so often to give your room a whole new look.
Expressing your own individuality and style in your home is great fun, and when your friends come and visit, your colors, accessories and artwork become a welcome mat for camaraderie, questions, and all the stories.
