Each piece in our varied and ever-developing collection has its own story. “Vertical Communion” by Matt Kaplinsky is a recent addition that is already sparking conversation and interest. Here is an insight into the art, the story behind the piece and why it would make a great choice for your next art purchase.
Meet Matt

Matt Kapinksy first wowed the ALG community with his artwork “Be Made an Instrument of Peace” which was part of our Visiting Artists Show in 2025. The flowers in this piece, for him, represent the blooming of creativity and are a motif he has visited frequently when exploring his artistic vision.
A Dallas native, Matt was first creatively inspired by gardens and the beauty of nature that gave him access to. Over the years, he has taught himself to use a variety of media and now primarily uses oil paint, creating original works largely inspired by still life items, gardening, and natural history.
After auditing a class in Art History at Southern Methodist University, the world of art opened up to him even further and he developed a keen interest in nineteenth and twentieth century painters. Artistic inspirations of particular note include David Bates, John Alexander, Robert Daughters, Marsden Hartley, Bonnard, Matisse, Van Gogh, Monet and many others. From there, he explored the importance of mark-making and leaving evidence of the artist’s hand everywhere on the canvas.
Matt continues to travel to find inspiration for his artwork and says about his creative pursuits, “For me, the important thing about art is what you take from it. Both upon its viewing and afterwards.”
Meet “Vertical Communion”

Nature has the power to stop us in our tracks, and that’s what Matt has captured in his piece “Vertical Communion.” It’s an interpretation of a time when he saw a lighting store with an entrance framed by vertical displays of living plants. The way the light enhanced, highlighted and defined the plants made the organic forms even more of a visual spectacle.
It’s fascinating how fleeting moments can evoke such powerful feelings and a wonder that lingers. If you’re a creative, it can linger until you take the experience and make something out of it. The cool color palette and depth of shapes in Matt’s creation make it a unique, intriguing piece to have in your home and expand your art collection.
Experience “Vertical Communion” for yourself at ALG Fine Art. We are situated in the heart of the Dallas Design District on the iconic Dragon Street and open Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm.
