2020 was a year that none of us saw coming. An unprecedented COVID‑19 pandemic, intensifying political division and widening inequality, all of which have affected everyone – in every community. I wanted to take this time to reflect back on 2020 and draw upon my work as a glass artist to give you inspiration and hope for what might be to come.
There are four valuable lessons that have stuck with me most this year that I wanted to share with you, and true to form, a sparkly work reflecting each of them.
- Nothing stays still – change is inevitable
We all know that change is inevitable, yet somehow we think that everything’s going to last forever (both the good times and the bad). The truth is – change is never far from us.
When change happens quickly, like it has this year, we need to ground ourselves in the moment, so we are better prepared to face whatever life throws at us.
“YOU ARE HERE” captures both the chaos of change, and the endless possibilities, but it shows there’s something restful about knowing one main thing: where you are.

- Self-care is important
Taking time for yourself is not selfish or lazy; sometimes it’s just good to stop, pause and reboot. This can be anything from taking a walk to your favorite place, a candle-lit bubble bath or simply curling up on your sofa with a good book.
“DRAMA” reflects the serenity and the chaos of whatever passes by, allowing you to look through the lume glass and accept the reflection you see with love and gratitude.

- Have something to look forward to
Most of our plans this year have been put on hold, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look to the future with hope, knowing that we’ll soon be able to spend time with those we love and visit the places that we’ve not been able to travel to this year.
One of my favorite pieces is “DREAMSCAPE.” It’s created from a dream of space, freedom and hope. This hand-cut, fused glass mural faces the future boldly with the expectation of dreams becoming a reality.

- Be kind. Always
Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Keeping that in the back of your mind will help you in making the decision to be kind to everyone you come across. Just like you, someone may be having an awful day, and you yourself have the power to make it better or make it worse. Choose wisely.
This year has made it harder for us to express our love (in a physical sense) to those around us, so I created these glass, heart-headed lume sculptures. They’re my very own way of throwing love out into the world, so that you can literally give someone a “hug” despite the pandemic. Each hand-sculpted and will have their own unique color combination and stance.
I’m looking forward to the promise of 2021 with all the hope I have, and I look forward to sharing more of my work with you throughout the year.
