The massive winter snowstorm that swept across Texas over the last week or so has been a test of endurance for all those it has affected. Hundreds of thousands of people were without heat or power for days, while others struggled to get food, medicine, and other necessities as the sub-freezing temperatures and icy precipitation continued to linger. Thankfully, it appears to have passed over the last few days, but people are still feeling the effects – and will do so for some time.
Just as we thought we’d had the worst of it after such a hard 12 months with Covid-19, the storms tested the endurance and patience of the best of us.
On the bright side, it was heart-warming to see how communities helped each other through monetary contributions, donations of goods and services, volunteering their time or their homes, or even simply checking in on their neighbors.
It’s times like these that we can sometimes respond to stressors by having extreme thoughts that can be overblown and catastrophic, and then we often treat these thoughts as truth. Rather than trying to suppress those feelings, I highly recommend grounding yourself in the present moment; in the here and now and take a look at where you are.
“YOU ARE HERE”
This triptych glass art mural is about recognizing the chaos that surrounds us, but more importantly, it’s about finding our ‘rest’ by knowing where you are.
We may not have a “normal” right now, but we have the present moment. As we surrender our expectations in the present moment, we are gifted adaptability and endurance.
While we may not be able to control the world around us, we can still ground ourselves in the present moment and acknowledge where we are…how far we’ve come… and that we have high hopes for the future.
