This evening will feature my newest kaleidoscoped watercolor lucite series, “Centered.” The series focuses on the breath-taking, restorative, and centering moments nature gave me as I watercolored during my travels.
During the Fall of 2016, on my way to studying under a Glass Master in Murano, Italy, I stayed in the classic Chianti Hills and was inspired by the leaves changing color across the hills in Tuscany. The sunsets were getting richer and rosier, while my brush glided across the page each day to capture the mesmerizing views before the light abandoned the villa’s patio. A little gatto would come and nestle at my feet as I painted, giving me nature’s support as I worked.
Then the rosy hues followed me to where I lived in the middle of the Venetian Lagoon on the glass island of Murano, perching on my rooftop as I watercolored the vibrant water traffic of Murano’s Grand Canal below my tiny top floor apartment.
I let the watercolors soothe me as I painted narrow boats and wide vaporettis bobbing and passing in front of the beautiful old buildings as my mind and body rested from the grueling daily work of developing a new glass skill. The boats tied up on either side seemed to nod in approval as they rose and I fell more in love with the little glass island day by day.
The bouncing canal and my love of water lead me back to the summers I spent at Lake Marie in Antioch, Illinois, perfecting my glass lume, playing with my family and little cousins at our cottage, and watching the ever-changing face of Lake Marie in awe.
I’ve seen Lake Marie in so many phases through the years – and she remains a living breathing entity in my mind. I love watercoloring her spirit, her restful shoreline juxtaposed with her wildness as she plays with the wind and dances around as I work, reminding me that while movement brings change, it doesn’t really change who you are at the core.
I wandered through the watercolors of my travels in my newest kaleidoscoped lucite series, recognizing how my experiences have shaped me, changed me, and touched so many different parts of my life in ways I could never have foretold. Who would have guessed that nature would have such a centering influence on me? Or that I would crave water or wide open sunsets whenever I was facing big life decisions?
Creating art in this way helps me feel a greater sense of the open space, in the sky and sea and beauty of what’s been created all around us.
I’m delighted to pass on that centering influence filled with hope and rest to the world in my newest kaleidoscoped lucite series “Centered.”
I hope you can join me for what promises to be a magical and inspiring evening where I’ll be showcasing this new work.
