The Art of a Showgirl

If you know me, you’ll know that I’m a massive Swiftie! I’ve been listening to The Life of a Showgirl all month long!

I love the fun and frivolous vibes. As an artist, I of course appreciate the references to the painting of Ophelia by John Everett Millais.

So I thought I’d have a bit of fun and highlight pieces of my artwork that I think fit into the showgirl aesthetic.

“Bloom & Sigh”

I have to start with my newest piece, a collaboration with Melanie Brannan. Bold impressionist brushstrokes create the look of water which ties into the album artwork. The white flowers even look like the flowers in John Everett Millais’ painting of Ophelia.

“Free Mirrors”

Every showgirl has a good mirror to get ready in. Out of all my mirror pieces, I decided “Free Mirrors” fit the vibe best. The songs on this album are all about feeling free to be herself and create a life she’s really happy with. That’s what this piece represents to me too.

“Floating Bloom, orange”

The vibrant orange of this one of my “Floating Blooms” mirrors the color scheme of The Life of a Showgirl perfectly. Then there’s the song lyric “Thank you for the lovely bouquet.” With my glass flowers, you can create a bouquet that lasts forever!

“Let It Go”

For me, this piece embraces the same themes as the song Opalite. I used my proprietary thrown glass method to create shards of glass that I pieced together into a fused glass creation. I let go of the outcome, accepted what will be, will be, and learned to see the beauty in front of me. Just like Taylor sings, I’ve had to dance through the lightning strikes and “Let It Go” represents that.

“Director’s Cut”

This was created for last year’s Visiting Artists Show with the theme of owning our stories. I’ve learned to step into the role of director of my life. The “Glass Strings” sculptures represent all the individual strings or factors from the past that brought me to the present. In the album, Taylor reflects on her past and how it got her to where she is today. Now, she’s fearlessly taking the role of director of her life!

What’s your favorite song from the new album? How could you bring the fun vibes of The Life of a Showgirl into your art collection and interior design? As of posting, all these pieces are still available to purchase. Browse my other artwork here.
