Mental clutter. You know the feeling, you feel as if you’re being pulled in a hundred different directions, you’re forgetting important dates, and you’re switching from task to task – yet nothing seems to really get ‘finished.’
As life slowly returns to some sort of normality, I’ve been reminded not to let my mind get too cluttered with life’s whirlwind.
It was my cluttered mind that inspired this glass art mural “THE CLEARING.” I realized that by decluttering, it helped me welcome productivity, focus and most importantly, calmness into my daily life. The white flower is a representation of that beautiful calmness once it had a good clearing.
Decluttering allows us to see beauty again. This could be a mental decluttering or a physical one. If we have too many negative thoughts or too much physical clutter around us – both can stop us from seeing what’s really there beyond the mess.
A sweeping out of my head on a particularly windy day, “THE CLEARING” is my hand-cut, fused glass way of sending all the whirlwind sailing away so I can focus on the hope and peace a good clearing can give.
Here are some things that helped me give my mind a good clearing:
Rethink sleep
Sometimes we just aren’t getting enough sleep. Perhaps our sleeping patterns are out of sync and we need to retrain them again by setting a clear bedtime routine that works around our work, lifestyle and family life.
Take a walk
Getting outside and doing some kind of physical activity is a great way to get stuff off your mind. I like to go for walks with friends, but whether you go alone or with friends it doesn’t matter. Spending some physical energy clears the mind.
Get in touch with nature
Similar to “take a walk” above, but maybe by yourself so you can really take time to reflect and unwind. I like to go somewhere with water … the ocean, a river, a lake, or even watching rain bounce off the branches in the backyard. Somehow this can be calming and focusing at the same time.
Use art as a reminder
Having some kind of visual, such as a piece of art, can really help us refocus and remind us of what’s most important in your life, and what’s most important for you to focus on right now.
