Creating your own solo art show comes with its own set of challenges. It’s deeply personal, incredibly rewarding, and, at times, it feels scary. But as Rick Rubin so beautifully said:
“The goal of the art isn’t to obtain perfection. The goal is to share who we are and how we see the world. Artists allow us to see what we are unable to see but somehow already know.” – Rick Rubin
I keep repeating this quote back to myself as I’m busy putting all the preparations together for my solo art show “It Started in Paris.”
This show will mark a significant turning point in my own artistic journey. Confronting past struggles with self-doubt and letting go of the pressure of perfectionism, I want this show to be a testament to the power of embracing individuality, pushing boundaries, and finding liberation through art.
I’ll be the first to admit that I often find myself chasing perfection in my work. There’s this little voice in my head that wants every detail to be just right, every colour to blend flawlessly, every texture to feel intentional. But the more I create, the more I realize that perfection isn’t the goal – it’s the journey that I’ve been on to arrive at this work and being able to express and share that with you is what makes this so special.
Art isn’t about making something flawless – it’s about creating something honest. It’s about translating emotions, experiences, and perspectives into something that can be celebrated. When I let go of perfection and just create from the heart, that’s when the real magic happens.
Some of my favourite pieces, and the ones that feel the most me, have come from moments where I stopped overthinking and simply allowed the creative process to naturally unfold. So, I’m learning (slowly, but surely) to embrace the “messiness” of creativity. To let the glass break as it wants to, let the kiln shape it as it needs to. Because in the end, art isn’t about control, it’s about connection. And that’s way more powerful than perfection.
From Curator to Artist
The other challenge I’ve had to overcome is switching my brain from creator mode to Gallery Director – and when it’s your own Art Show believe me, it’s a million times harder!
Last year I had the privilege of curating exhibitions for both visiting and resident artists. I’ve worked behind the scenes, carefully selecting and arranging pieces to tell a story, evoke emotion, and create a dialogue between the artwork and the audience. But this time, I find myself on the other side – working intensely behind the scenes to promote my solo Art Show and prepare a special opening evening on Saturday, March 1.
