The Art of Collecting Art

Choosing a piece of art for your home or a particular room isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about expressing yourself and creating a space that reflects your unique personality.

I understand that navigating the world of art and choosing pieces for your home can often feel overwhelming, so I’m here to guide you through some of the things that I’ve learnt as both an artist and collector to help you curate a collection of beautiful artwork that tells a story…

… a story of you.

Discovering what art to collect

The world of art collecting can be sooo diverse, some embrace artwork across eras and mediums, whilst others prefer certain artistic styles. Maybe you like collecting art from one particular artist. The important thing is there are NO RULES with art!

Your collection should serve as a reflection of your personal journey; pieces that speak to you during a particular time in your life, perhaps remind you of places you’ve visited or even art that evokes memories of special people who have influenced your life.

Let your interior style guide you

The first reference when choosing art, should be where you’re going to hang this beautiful piece.

When anyone visits ALG Fine Art, one of the first questions we ask clients is ‘Where is this special piece going to be installed or hung?’ As much as you might fall in love with a certain piece, it also needs to complement your interior style – whatever that might be!

Embrace the power of color

When choosing an art collection, color often plays an important role. If you have a fairly neutral palette in your home, you may need art that gives the walls a ‘pop’ of colour, or you may want to complement or contrast certain accents in a room.

Remember, balance is key!

Working with a professional artist

If the prospect of choosing art feels so daunting, partnering with an interior design stylist can be so beneficial. I often work with the interior stylists by commissioning art for their clients as part of a home renovation or design makeover.

Working closely with your interior designer or directly with the artist can provide you with inspiration and creative direction. I’m always here to hold your hand to make sure your collection says as much about you, the collector – as well as reflect your interior style.

Make art the starting point

Sometimes, inspiration strikes the other way around. A captivating piece of art can spark the entire design of a room. Allowing the artwork to dictate the color scheme, furniture choices, and overall ambiance can be a great way to set the theme of an entire room!

Choosing art for a specific room

Not all art is created equal for every space. The size and layout of the room should be considered too. A large statement piece might overpower a small hallway, while a tiny print might get lost on a vast living room wall.

I can help you experiment with different arrangements and sizes to find the perfect balance.

It’s a personal choice

The most important thing to remember is that art is a personal choice, so don’t be afraid to experiment, trust your instincts and step out of your comfort zone.
