One of the things I love about creating art is being able to find moments of mindfulness during the process. The ALG Fine Art Studio is not only a place of work, but also a place of reflection and mindfulness.
If you are a lover of art, you too can find moments of mindfulness using any artwork of your choice. It’s simply about connecting with the present moment when you’re looking at a piece of art.
Let me share a few thoughts to help you practice mindfulness using art.
I’d love you to try this and see where this takes you…
Choose your artwork
It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece in a museum – choose any art piece that sparks your curiosity. It could be a painting on your living room wall, a photograph in a magazine, or an art piece in a gallery from your favorite artist. Choose something that you’re naturally attracted to.
Sit and Observe
Find a comfortable position to sit with your chosen artwork. Allow your initial observations to flow freely.
What do you see?
Give the piece a basic description, noting the colors, lines, and shapes that dominate the composition. Follow the lines and shapes from a start point, to the end – as if you were drawing or painting it as the artist.
Delve deeper
Now notice the texture of the artwork, if possible. Does it feel smooth or rough? How does that texture make you feel? Observe how light and shadow interact within the piece, creating depth and dimension.
Try to stay present
It’s natural for our minds to wander as thoughts come into our heads. When you find your thoughts drifting, gently bring your attention back to the artwork. Don’t judge yourself; simply acknowledge the thought and return your focus to the present moment.
Embrace the journey
Practicing mindfulness is not always about achieving a specific outcome but about experiencing the journey itself. Allow yourself to be captivated by the artwork, letting go of any expectations or judgments.
As you practice this mindfulness regularly, you’ll find yourself becoming more attuned to the present moment. You might also discover new details in the artwork each time you revisit it. Take some time afterwards to reflect on your experience. How did it make you feel? Did you notice anything new about yourself or the artwork?
By incorporating art into your mindfulness practice, you unlock a deeper connection with the present moment, fostering a sense of calmness and clarity.
The next time you feel the need to take time away from the day’s chaos. Allow yourself a moment and embark on your mindful journey using art.
